Birds at the Pousada 3 Pinheiros Lodge

The township of Campos do Jordão is located in a chain of mountains called the Serra de Mantiqueira. Due to the altitude, that varies between 1600 and 2000 m, the climate is moderate, dry winters (July and August) with night temperatures frequently below zero and humid, rainy summers.  For birdwatching, Autumn (march to June) and Spring  (September to December) are especially recommended.  In Spring (mating season) the birds will respond well to playback.

Because of the altitude and peculiarity of the climate, several species of birds and mammals adapted to cooler temperatures are found here, such as Thick-billed Saltator (Saltator maxillosus),  Vinaceous Parrot (Amazona vinacea), black-and-gold cotinga (Tijuca atra), Swallow-tailed cotinga (Phibalura flavirostris), Rusty-barred owl (Strix hylophila), black-capped piprites (Piprites pileatus),red-breasted toucan (Ramphastos dicolorus), rufous-tailed antthrush (Chimaeza ruficauda) and many others.

Other species that are not specific to higher altitudes are seen more frequently here than in the lowlands, such as Hepatic tanager (Piranga flava), Black hawk eagle (Spizaetus tyrannus), Fruitcrow (Pyroderus scutatus), Robust woodpecker (Campephilus robustus)

The lodge is especially famous because of the Plovercrest (Stephanoxis lalandi), which can easily be observed throughout the year.

At a site nearby, Long-trained Nightjar (Macropsalis forcipata) can be seen at dusk.

Until now (July 2011), the list of birds registered in Campos do Jordão numbers 225 species (see list, left) and 172 in the area of the lodge.
